Four companies are positioned at the intersection of AI's exponential compute demand and America's aging power infrastructure. Constellation Energy (CEG), Talen Energy (TLN), Vistra (VST), and GE Vernova (GEV). Each offers a different slice of the same thesis: AI needs power, and lots of it.

But here's the contrarian angle: the premium is justified because the contract quality is unprecedented. These aren't merchant power prices subject to market fluctuations. These are fixed-price, take-or-pay agreements with the most capitalized companies in history.

The risk isn't the contract. It's the execution. Nuclear plants have a nasty habit of overrunning budgets and missing deadlines. Three Mile Island's restart is projected for 2027. If it slips, the market will punish CEG disproportionately.

Talen's Co-Location Play: The Smartest Structural Arbitrage

Talen is doing something different. They're not just selling power. They're building data centers next to their nuclear plant and selling the bundle.

The AWS agreement is the tell. 1,920 MW of contracted capacity. That's the largest single-site power agreement in corporate history. And Talen has a 4 GW pipeline of data center options. If even half of that converts, this company triples its revenue base.

The co-location model solves the transmission problem. You don't need new transmission lines if the data center is on-site. You bypass the 7-10 year interconnection queue entirely. That's the hidden value that isn't in the financial models.

Talen has figured out that in the AI era, the grid is the constraint. So they removed the grid from the equation.

The EV/EBITDA multiple of 15-18x looks rich. But this isn't a utility anymore. It's a data center developer with a captive power source. The market hasn't fully re-rated it for that distinction.

Vistra's Diversified Bet: The Helix Experiment

Vistra is the most interesting structural play. They've partnered with NVIDIA and KKR to launch Helix — a joint venture aimed at building AI infrastructure powered by Vistra's generation fleet. This is the first real attempt to vertically integrate power and compute.

The logic is sound. NVIDIA provides the GPUs. KKR provides the capital. Vistra provides the power. The combined entity can deliver turnkey AI infrastructure to enterprises that don't have the technical capability to build their own.

EBITDA growth of 30%+ with an EV/EBITDA of 10-12x makes VST the cheapest of the four. The market is discounting the Helix execution risk. That's fair. Joint ventures have a nasty habit of dying from governance complexity.

But if Helix lands its first few projects, the re-rating potential is substantial. VST isn't just an electricity play anymore. It's an AI infrastructure play with a power hedge built in.

GE Vernova: The Picks-and-Shovels Play

GEV is the only company here that doesn't take power risk. They sell the equipment that generates it.

The backlog is staggering. $176 billion. AI data center orders have doubled. 116 GW of gas turbines waiting to be delivered. The company is a toll booth on the AI power superhighway.

The P/S ratio of 4-5x looks expensive for a manufacturer. But GEV has pricing power that most industrials don't. They're one of only three companies in the world that can build large-scale gas turbines. The other two are Siemens Energy and Mitsubishi Heavy. That's an oligopoly.

Here's what the bullish narrative misses. The grid itself.

Even if you have the power generation, you need to get it to the data center. Transmission lines in the US take 7-10 years to permit and build. The interconnection queue is backlogged with projects waiting years for approval.

This is the constraint that could derail the entire thesis. Not demand. Not financing. Not technology. Bureaucracy.

The 2026 regulatory environment is tightening. MiCA in Europe. Stablecoin clarity in the US. But the energy regulatory landscape is still stuck in the 20th century. FERC approval for Vistra's Cogentrix acquisition came through, but that's one transaction. The broader grid modernization agenda remains stalled.

The second blind spot is AI CapEx fatigue. Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta are spending hundreds of billions on AI infrastructure. If the returns don't materialize, if the models plateau, if the bubble deflates — these power contracts become renegotiation targets. The companies can't cancel them entirely, but they can slow the pace of new commitments.

That's the real risk. Not the existing contracts. The next contracts. The ones that haven't been signed yet.

The Takeaway: Buy the Bottleneck, Not the Hype

The AI power trade isn't dead. It's correcting. The 20-40% pullback from highs has created asymmetric opportunities for investors who understand the structural dynamics.

CEG and TLN offer the highest quality revenue visibility through long-term contracts with investment-grade counterparties. VST offers the cheapest entry into the AI infrastructure theme through the Helix JV. GEV offers the most diversified exposure through its equipment monopoly.

The key differentiator going forward will be execution. Can Three Mile Island restart on time? Can Talen convert its 4 GW pipeline? Can Helix land its first customers? Can GEV deliver on its backlog without margin erosion?

Watch the quarterly CapEx guidance from the hyperscalers. That's the leading indicator for this entire trade. If Microsoft and Google reaffirm their AI infrastructure spending, the power thesis strengthens. If they blink, the correction deepens.
