
The Great ETH Supply Squeeze Isn't Coming — It's Already Broken

The code doesn't lie, but the narrative does. Over the past twelve months, ETH's exchange balance has fallen to levels not seen since the 2020 DeFi summer. Staking deposits have pushed past 34 million ETH — nearly a third of circulating supply. EIP-1559 has burned hundreds of thousands of ETH in fees since the Merge. So why is ETH/BTC still bleeding? Why is the market treating the most hyped supply squeeze in crypto as background noise? Because supply tightening is real, but it's not the variable that moves this market. Context first: the story goes like this. Spot Ethereum ETFs provide institutional demand. Staking locks 30% of the float. Fee burns remove ETH from existence. Put together, the liquid float shrinks, prices rise. That's the thesis. It sounds clean. But it's a textbook case of confusing a slow-moving fundamental with a catalyst. Since the Merge, ETH's net issuance has dropped from around 4% annually in the proof-of-work era to roughly 0.7% today. That's a genuine supply shock. The contrarian angle: retail and even professional traders are watching the same on-chain dashboards. Everyone knows staking is at 30%. Everyone knows exchange balances are falling. That information is already in the price. What's not priced is the failure mode. The market has been conditioned to think "supply down equals price up." But in a credit-driven bull market, price is set by leverage and liquidity, not by float alone. If the Fed delays cuts and risk assets roll over, ETH's supply mechanics won't save it. I remember 2021: Tether and exchange inflows drove alts higher, not token burns. Liquidity is just trust with a timeout. And trust in the "supply squeeze" narrative is wearing thin.
